My Healthy Marketing Story
By Lauren, Founder
It was a nice spring day as my friend and I meandered along a local trail while she talked about her business as a healing arts practitioner. She was lamenting about the never-ending struggle it had been to build and market her practice. All she wanted to do was use her considerable schooling to help people feel better in their bodies. The “business” side of her business made her feel like a sell out. Her arms waved up and down in an exaggerated motion as she said, “This just isn’t ‘me,’ but I realize there are people out there that actually like marketing!”
I laughed, and said “I’m one of them!” On some level, I was a bit jealous that she spent all day helping others in such a hands-on way. My skillset had led me down a different path though. Over the course of our walk, my mind had already effortlessly flooded with all the relatively easy fixes I could see to help her get more business – without becoming a full-time marketer herself.
Why I created Healthy Marketing
The reality is I’ve always wanted to help people, but what I do best is build businesses. I got started early. I went to business camp (real thing) the summer after ninth grade, started working for Microsoft later in high school, majored in marketing and entrepreneurship at UW, and worked my way up the corporate ladder for years, culminating in almost a decade of service as a marketing executive. I’ve worked for some of the biggest and smallest names in tech, grateful both to the admirable mentors who showed me the way, and the tormentors who forced me to be better. This diverse experience was balanced further by a fair bit of pro bono consulting across a variety of industries.
I decided to make the shift to offering services outside tech early in 2023, a few months before the aforementioned and validating walk with my friend. I had emerged at that point after life in COVID lockdown with a changed family structure, and having also overcome a luckily short-lived, but awful, health obstacle. This gave me deep admiration for healing arts practitioners who helped me because they faced the especially unique challenge of often having less time and resources than the average entrepreneur given the nature of their selfless work. I knew that with my experience in marketing, I was well positioned to help them in a meaningful way, and over the next few months, Healthy Marketing was born.
The reality of marketing services
I acknowledge there are a lot of resources for healing arts practitioners out there. Some of them are helpful. A lot are not. I’ve heard many stories of intelligent, well-meaning practitioners getting ripped off, sometimes badly, by agencies that take their money and either waste it or run. I’ve also found it painful to see how often people to claim to be “experts” at business building despite their credentials and experience not adding up.
My objective is to support those who heal by supplementing the good information out there, and offering an alternative to the bad. While I’m not a healing practitioner myself, I am a trustworthy ally who knows marketing backwards and forwards. If I can help you, I will. If I can recommend a better or cheaper way for you to get what you need, I’ll do that instead. For now, I’m focused on generating actionable content for you, along with limited consulting/coaching services. Over time, Healthy Marketing may expand to offer additional services as they make sense.
Wishing you success however you define it
